A review has been launched after a Hillmorton Hospital inpatient died at the weekend.
Health New Zealand have provided few details of what happened, but, in a statement, Canterbury Specialist Mental Health Services general manager Vicki Dent confirmed a Hillmorton patient died in Christchurch Hospital over the weekend.
St John was notified of an incident just before 9pm on 8 March.
A spokesperson said a person was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.
RNZ understands the man died in Christchurch Hospital the following day and was in seclusion at the time of the incident.
Dent said a review was now being carried out.
“We can confirm that one of our Hillmorton inpatients passed away at Christchurch Hospital over the weekend. Our sincere condolences are with their loved ones at this very difficult time.
“The death is before the coroner and we will assist them with their investigations, as well as carrying out an independent serious event review.”
